Opened to the public in July 2022 after the Rwanda Environment Management Authority restored a wetland that had been degraded by decades of farming and settlement, Nyandungu now spans 121 hectares between Gasabo and Kicukiro. Boardwalks over papyrus swamp, cycling and hiking trails, a medicinal-plant garden, picnic spots and an on-site restaurant — five minutes from downtown and it feels like a different country.
Come most Sunday mornings. Flat, shaded boardwalks and the birdsong drowns out whatever's stressing you during the week — 100+ species logged here, apparently.
Rented a bike for the first time here and now it's a weekly habit. Trails are well kept and there's always someone to ride with, especially on Car Free Sundays.
